I told you I'd post on Wednesday evening, and here it is.
You've all been wonderful, and I would love to send something like this to each and every one of you. But I can't. 'Cause there's only one. So here is the winner of the Grand Prize: yarns, needles, and all sorts of stuff designed to keep a knitter happy --
Woo hoo!!
Let me close with a final round of gratitude. I've known for a long time that knitters are some of the most generous souls out there. We clothe our loved ones, and pass along the wish for warmth and comfort with every finished object. Even when it's for ourselves. We often forget ourselves in the mass of UFOs. Y'all have taken time out during the busiest part of the year to pitch in for a total stranger, using some of the jewels of your stash to do so. (I know. I've seen 'em!) Many of you have enclosed notes and other gifts to make Maggie's days a bit cheerier. I've packed the boxes and smiled, and had tears in my eyes when I've heard her overwhelmed response on the phone. I've gotten to know so many new people -- and strengthened ties to those I already knew -- and I'm proud to have your acquaintance.
My fondest wishes go out to all of you during this holiday season for health and happiness. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

These socks have made occasionally crappy days become much better. Feeling hand-knit socks on my always cold feet somehow managed to cheer me up. Every time I wear a pair (and that's very often) it makes me overwhelmingly happy to think that people who've never met me took the time out to make something that made my day.
I cannot thank you all enough.
And Kelly, you're a stinker for putting my deviant link up. But you make socks, so it's okay.
Love.

Hey girl - you're talented. The world will know that someday!

Okay, I'm sitting here weeping at what beautiful things you've both said. I am so grateful to be able to contribute something so small and seemingly insignificant and have it mean something so deep to the recipient. I think that's the biggest reason why knitters knit: to tell the recipient that they are special and cared for. We (or at least "I") usually want out knitted items to resemble personal hugs each time that they are worn or put on. Therefore, socks just seem to fit the purpose perfectly. And yes, you are extremely talented, Maggie. Is that you in the pictures? They are all quite moving. My (little?) brother uses the same site and has some of his works on there, too. I love checking things out - it's great to see so many talented young people in this world. And you are no exception. Beautiful images!
Enjoy your socks, even the ones that are too orange. ;) Okay, a little self-conscious of the color choices. I just hope that you find comfort in the fact that we all want to clothe you with our warmth and strength.
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone. And Kelly - thank you so very much for creating such a wonderful community here. We are all grateful for your thoughtfulness. Don't say that you're not a nice person, either, dang it!!!

O my goodness, I won! Yippeahh!!
I actually felt honored to be part of that group. It's not such a huge effort to knit a pair of socks. And if these socks are received by someone who really appreciates them that's the best reward!
I keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, Maggie!
Best wishes from Germany
